USYD Health Executive Education Sponsored Event: Clinical Essentials in Oral Medicine - Online

Oral health is an important component of general health. 

In this online course, you will learn about common oral health issues encountered in clinical practice and consider the implications of poor oral health for a range of target groups. You will also explore a range of different oral health conditions, their recommended treatment options, and how to promote oral health more broadly. This course is open to all health professionals and is comprised of 4 independent blocks of study.


Topics

1. Overview of common dental problems and emergencies (1.5 hour lecture plus a 30 minute quiz)

  • Dental disease (microbiological progressions)
  • Trauma
  • Odontogenic pain
  • Spreading odontogenic infection
  • Brief introduction to MRONJ presentation

2. Implications of poor oral health in systemic health management including childhood, ageing, and pregnancy (1.5 hour lecture plus a 30 minute quiz)

  • Overview of the relationship of oral health and systemic health
  • Identifying risk factors for periodontal disease
  • Poor oral health in ageing, delirium and falls, and aspiration pneumonia
  • Oral/dental issues of children (risk factor dental decay)
  • Oral health in pregnancy
3. Identifying suspicious oral lesions including precancerous lesions, oral presentation of sexually transmissible infections (STI), and oral mucositis related to cancer treatments (1.5 hour lecture plus a 30 minute quiz)
  • Oral viral/fungal infection
  • Non-infective oral lesions
  • Premalignant oral lesions
  • Oral manifestation of STI
4. Interprofessional consultation and communication on medications with oral health implications (2 hour lecture plus a 30 minute quiz)
  • Role of antibiotic prescribing dental infections
  • Role of analgesics in dental pain
  • Anticoagulant and Antiplatelet medications
  • Antiresorptive medications and cancer drugs
  • Polypharmacy, xerostomia and hyposalivation


Learning Outcomes

  1. Outline the basic anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity.
  2. Describe common dental and oral diseases.
  3. Understand the relationship between oral health and general health.
  4. Evaluate when the oral health referral is required.
  5. Recognise oral health conditions as a cause or consequence of systemic diseases.
  6. Discuss oral health considerations/implications for specific target groups.
