Topics

The program adopts a blended learning approach, self-paced online learning and clinical practice in a simulated clinical setting as detailed:

  • Introduction to local anaesthesia and review of head & neck anatomy
  • Neurophysiology of nerves and mechanism of action of local anaethesia
  • Local anaesthetic agents
  • LA techniques & procedures
  • Calculation of maximum dose and systemic complications
  • Local complications and post-op considerations.

Face-to-face clinical component: 6 hours, practical skills of local anaesthetic injection in the simulation clinic.


Learning Outcomes

  • Obtain and record a relevant history of the individual's medical, social, dietary and oral health status.
  • Understand the properties of dental local anaesthetic agents, including factors that may decrease their efficacy.
  • Select and use the appropriate anaesthetic agent and technique for patient care.
  • Maintain accurate, consistent, legible and contemporaneous records of local anaesthetic administration.
  • Anatomical refresh and ability to locate the appropriate sites for injection.

Course Delivery Method

Convenient online sessions and a 6-hour practical workshop of simulated practice.


Course pre-requisites

Prior completion of training required for registration as an Oral Health Therapist or Dental Hygienist in Australia.
