On 1 May 2024 the National Safety and Quality Primary and Community Healthcare Standards became the benchmark for accreditation assessments for private dental practices.

To support practices in their preparation for accreditation, a range of resources are available on the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care's (ACSQHC) website, including:

    • fact sheets and advisories
    • mapping of the Primary and Community Healthcare Standards to the NSQHS Standards first edition
    • accreditation process information

    ACCESS THE RESOURCES

About The Standards - from ACSQHC:

"Over 5,000 dental practices participate in voluntary dental practice accreditation. Accreditation of practices offers the opportunity to showcase commitment to excellence while aligning with regulatory frameworks.

Before this transition, private dental practices were assessed against the first edition of the National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards.

The Commission has worked closely with the Australian Dental Association (ADA) to support the sector’s transition to the new standards. A suite of useful resources and information is also available on the ADA website for their members."

Therapeutic Guidelines recently provided us with an update relating to the Antibiotic prescribing in primary care: Therapeutic Guidelines summary table.

In 2023 the table temporarily included alternatives to first-line antimicrobials to provide free access to recommendations to assist healthcare professionals navigating the multiple concurrent antimicrobial shortages occurring in the community.

The TGA has informed Therapeutic Guidelines that the number and nature of antimicrobial shortages has now returned to baseline. As such, the table containing shortages advice has been replaced.

The new version follows the previous approach of only providing first-line therapy recommendations.

    View the updated table here.
