    Join us this Diabetes Week 2024 (14 July - 20 July) for a webinar focused on lifestyle strategies to lower blood sugar levels. This webinar will support members in identifying appropriate dietary advice/options for patients living with diabetes.

    Presentation Details

    This presentation begins with a pragmatic discussion of why the topic of diet and diabetes is relevant to oral health professionals. The different diabetes types and their causes will be briefly covered before moving to explore different lifestyle strategies for blood glucose control. The topical low carbohydrate diet and safety concerns for those with diabetes and the general population will be discussed. The webinar takes a practical focus with skills such as label reading for hidden sugar sources, screening for diabetes in the dental office, collaborative opportunities between oral health professionals and dietitians and resources for use in the dental office identified.

    Learning Objectives

    1. Explain why blood glucose control is important for oral health.

    2. Identify lifestyle strategies to lower blood glucose levels including maintenance of oral health.

    3. Identify different names for sugar and locate them on food packaging.

    4. Discuss the current evidence for and against low carbohydrate diets including safety concerns for those with diabetes and the general population.

    5. Identify collaborative opportunities with nutrition professionals to facilitate best practice care for client/patient outcomes.

    About Dietitian & Nutritionist Dr Emily Calton PhD

    Dr Emily Calton is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, Accredited Sports Dietitian and Nutritionist with a PhD in Public Health. Emily holds an academic position at Curtin University in Western Australia as a lecturer and researcher. She lectures into both the Masters of Dietetics and Bachelor of Science (Food Science and Nutrition) degrees, where she teaches advances in clinical nutrition including nutritional genomics, gut health, and evaluation of emerging diet trends.

    Her research interests include investigating the impact of diet on inflammation, metabolism, body composition, and surgical outcomes in health and disease states and she co-supervises higher-degree by research students across a variety of health disciplines. Emily is also Dietetics Research Co-Ordinator at two hospitals located in Perth, Western Australia.

    Through her telehealth practice The Nutrition Doctor, she helps clients around Australia make changes to their diets to improve their diet, manage health conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, digestive complaints, prostate cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, type 2 diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity and fatty liver. Emily is passionate about working collaboratively with health professionals including allied health, general practitioners and specialists to improve the health and performance of the Australian population.
